Cedar Relief Panel, ‘Virgin of the Apocalypse’

The Montalvo Family is a portrayal of the Virgin Mary and the baby Jesus at the apocalypse. The Cedar relief panel, ‘Virgin of the Apocalypse’ is based on that of Juan de Jáuregui, which was engraved in the 17th Century. The sculpture shows the Virgin protecting her Holy Child from a vicious seven-headed dragon, which is disturbing the family. Mary is shown in the heavens surrounded by sunlight and wearing twelve stars as a crown. She is seated above the moon. The selling price of this cedar wooden sculpture is $252.95.

Decoupage Chest, ‘Beloved Virgin of Guadalupe’

Ana Maria Gonzales created a chest in decoupage style to honor Our Lady of Guadalupe. The name of it is Decoupage chest, ‘Beloved Virgin of Guadalupe’. The Virgin of Guadalupe is a figure especially loved and revered by the people of Mexico. Her famous image is said to have appeared miraculously on the robe of St. Juan Diego, with Juan Diego holding Castilian roses. These roses were carried to prove the appearance of the Virgin of Guadalupe. St. Juan Diego proposed to the bishop, of Spanish decent, that a church be built in her honor. She was given the name as one who is the Americas’ patron of saint. This name provided by Pope John Paull II. To this day, Our Lady of Guadalupe is honored and celebrated each December 12. The price tag on this chest is $34.95.

Painted Wood Retablo, ‘Virgin Mary’

This Alejandro Chavez work depicts a loving Virgin Mary, posing with her son, Jesus and surrounded by flowers and a halo of light rays emanating from her head. This diarama (a “retablo”) is in a colorfully painted wooden chest. Chavez created the figures in ceramic plastic and hand paints each one. The Painted wood retablo, ‘Virgin Mary’ sells for $29.95.

‘Virgin with the Sleeping Child’

Alberto Torres here depicts Mary tenderly placing a blanket over the baby Jesus as he sleeps. Mary is shown in a grand gown with floral brocade. Torres decorates the clothing and halo with gold leaf, working in the style of the Cuzco school. This is to produce colonial-style religious art of the sort found in that city’s convents and monasteries. The painting — titled “Virgen con el Nino durmiente” in Spanish — is framed with hand-carved cedar embellished with gold leaf. The English translation is ‘Virgin with the Sleeping Child’ and sells for $192.95.
