Saint Gabriel is an archangel. In this painting, he is wearing a cape made of heavy fabric that is interwoven with a rich and raised design. Also, Saint Gabriel has a hat on with a broad brim. This style of dress is that of a Spanish grandee and is a representing soldier in God’s army. In the painting, ‘Archangel Gabriel, Soldier’, he is found holding on to a type of weapon called a matchlock gun. A painter named Edgar Aguirre recreated this piece from a portrait that was inspired by the School of Painting of Cuzco. Furthermore, it has colonial history behind it, in that such works were discovered in the convents of the within the city.
