The Spanish title “Virgin Inclinada” was given to this piece by the Montalvo Family. A golden halo surrounds the inclining head of Mary, whose face is so utterly calm that it is inspiring. The relief was carved from aromatic cedar wood, and finished with oil paints and gold leaf. The Virgin of Guadalupe who was named as “Patron Saint of the Americas” by Pope John Paul II, is highly respected by the citizens of Mexico city and is the darling of their hearts. December 12 is celebrated as her birthday. The Virgin of Guadalupe’s famous image made an appearance on the outer parts of Saint Juan Diego’s garment. As proof of this miraculous appearance, Castilian would carry roses. Our Lady of Guadalupe sent the Saint to the bishop of Spain in order to convince the bishop to construct a building for a church that would be built in honor of the Lady. Ana Maria Gonzalez has been inspired by the highly respected Lady to make a decoupage collection of crosses in honor of her existence. And for one cross, Gonzalez chose the banner proclaiming The Virgin of Guadalupe as the “Reina de Mexico y Emperatriz de las Americas,” meaning as Queen of Mexico and Empress of the Americas. The Virgin Mary is shown as a child in this trio of images by Xochitl and Rafael. She is carried by angels in a pale purple sky. The people of Mexico worship the Virgin of Guadalupe; Ana Maria Gonzalez has been inspired to design the decoupage chest, ‘Beloved Virgin of Guadalupe’ to honor her. Our Lady of Guadalupe  was declared as a patron saint of Americas by Pope John Paul II in 1999, the celebration is carried out on December 12. Her image miraculously appeared on the robe of Saint Juan Diego’s robe, he carried Castilian roses as a proof of her appearance. He was sent by Guadalupe to convince Spanish bishop to build a church in her honor. This chest can be had for as low as $34.95.

Mary was deep in her thoughts, while her baby was sleeping in her arms. The Montalvo Family illustrated a portrait of love and obedience to the God which was portrayed by the Virgin of Charity. The Cedar relief panel, ‘Inclined Virgin’ sculpture that costs $109.95 was crafted out of cedar wood, surrounded by bronze leaves, hand painted in oils. It was coated with lacquer to protect the carving and there was metal hook at the back to facilitate hanging.

This sese mask is presented by Bomukasa and Louis K. Botchway. It is a replica of those usually given to young females after undergoing certain initiation rites. The mask reveals expert worksmanship through the ornate details and unique use of organic dyes to render it. Females, both old and young, from Congo DR, Cameroon, and other Western African countries would come together for an initiation known as Hehle. The young females would undergo an inspection by a selected group of elderly women, as virginity was key in this ritual, and offer the results to only their respective clans. This gentle portrait, Cedar relief panel, ‘Virgin from the Countryside’, depicts Mary as an innocent country girl from Peru. A baby named Jesus is playing with Mary’s braids and hugs her neck with plump baby arms. Javier Ramirez’s work is sculpted in low relief, hand-painted and enhanced with bright bronze leaf. This sells for $152.95 and includes a hook on the back for wall hanging.

The Montalvo Family is a portrayal of the Virgin Mary and the baby Jesus at the apocalypse. The Cedar relief panel, ‘Virgin of the Apocalypse’ is based on that of Juan de Jáuregui, which was engraved in the 17th Century. The sculpture shows the Virgin protecting her Holy Child from a vicious seven-headed dragon, which is disturbing the family. Mary is shown in the heavens surrounded by sunlight and wearing twelve stars as a crown. She is seated above the moon. The selling price of this cedar wooden sculpture is $252.95.

This Alejandro Chavez work depicts a loving Virgin Mary, posing with her son, Jesus and surrounded by flowers and a halo of light rays emanating from her head. This diarama (a “retablo”) is in a colorfully painted wooden chest. Chavez created the figures in ceramic plastic and hand paints each one. The Painted wood retablo, ‘Virgin Mary’ sells for $29.95.

Alberto Torres here depicts Mary tenderly placing a blanket over the baby Jesus as he sleeps. Mary is shown in a grand gown with floral brocade. Torres decorates the clothing and halo with gold leaf, working in the style of the Cuzco school. This is to produce colonial-style religious art of the sort found in that city’s convents and monasteries. The painting — titled “Virgen con el Nino durmiente” in Spanish — is framed with hand-carved cedar embellished with gold leaf. The English translation is ‘Virgin with the Sleeping Child’ and sells for $192.95.
