Ghanaian Mask, ‘New Moon Healer’

With this fascinating mask of sese wood, Robert Nortey was inspired by the beliefs as well as traditions of the ancient days from which this carving was born. The Dagomba people located in much of the northern part of Ghana has art that Nortey does his absolute best to replicate with integrity. He enhances its beauty with an elaborate plate of brass. The customs of the Dagomba people regarding this mask, is that when the mask is worn that it be done at a time when a full moon is in the night’s sky.
