The Native Healer

With this fascinating mask of sese wood, Robert Nortey was inspired by the beliefs as well as traditions of the ancient days from which this carving was born. The Dagomba people located in much of the northern part of Ghana has art that Nortey does his absolute best to replicate with integrity. He enhances its beauty with an elaborate plate of brass. The customs of the Dagomba people regarding this mask, is that when the mask is worn that it be done at a time when a full moon is in the night’s sky. The belief is that this Ghanaian mask, ‘New Moon Healer’ carries properties of healing when worn at the proper time. It sells for $77.95.

The wood mask, ‘Tribal Healer’ was created by Wilson Aboagye. He goes about expressing the healing powers of a female who takes care of those whose health levels are not up to par. This female healer has been commonly referred to as a kokodouro. She is respected and has a sort of compelling elegance about her. Aboagye does a wonderful job in in portraying her characteristics in this carved mask that is made from a wood called The wood has been made smooth with polish of mansion. This was to give it an affluently glistened look and feel. This particular mask has a value of $39.95.

Victor Yao Delanya goes about carving this $47.95 wood mask, ‘Ghanaian Healer’ by using sese that is smooth to the touch. The serenity of this mask sort of goes in a direction of the spirits with a look of interest. The carving of a group of people in the eastern part of Ghana called the Akwapim. The mask is worn by the young Akwapim males who dress in special attire made for dances regarding healing. Delanyo has chosen to call this piece Aporn, which means health.
